Hawaii 2008
Saturday afternoon the wife and I went to a pool party we had been invited to. I wasn’t much in the mood to mingle, so I plopped down in a lawn chair, nursed a couple of mojitos, and pulled out my camera. The place was full of little kids swimming and playing at high velocity. Both my children are college age, so its been awhile since I’ve been around little people. I shot about 50 photos of the children running around and after reviewing them later that night I found only two that were interesting (see below).
While I was sitting in the lawn chair, it occurred to me, for no reason that I could think of, (maybe I was near the end of my second mojito) that I missed holding the hands of my children. I had forgotten how I enjoyed going for walks around the neighborhood with their tiny, soft hands swallowed up in yours. It wasn’t just a metaphor, you were actually leading them through this world…I guess I miss that part.
What’s that you say? Has FJ up and gone all mommy blog on us? No, not to worry. In fact, I will be heading out early Monday for a final week of work in the bush where I will be all manly and shit. See you this coming weekend, cheers, FJ.

Sometimes, after five or six miles of walking, you and your partner crest a long ridgeline and you stop to catch your breath. You can hear your heartbeat in your eardrums, you can taste dust and and metallic pollen on the back of your tongue, you pull at a sticker in your sock, you feel a drop of sweat run down your spine, and you stop and look. “What are you looking at,” your partner says.
“Just that,” you say. You stand in silence and look and drink lukewarm water.
“Its pretty much all downhill from here,” your partner remarks. You say nothing as you record the air temperature on your data sheet, its 94.3 degrees but you think it feels warmer.
As you start down the hill your partner says, “It sure beats a cubicle.”
You nod and smile and continue walking. You agree with this statement.

I am only in town for about a day and then I am off again, but I did want to post a few photos I shot in San Francisco last weekend. Enjoy.

The big news, for me anyway, is that I will be involved in extensive field surveys for the next month or so. My blogging duties will be limited during this time. I may get back for a few short weekends, but am pretty much going to be out of the loop. In the meantime, I would be curious what you think is behind the door below…overthinking is welcome. Enjoy, FJ.
